Lanan Racing’s Toby Sowery is aiming to secure second place in this year’s BRDC British F3 Championship standings at the season finale at Donington Park on 23-24 September, as he returns to one of his strongest circuits.
The 21-year-old claimed two victories at the East Midlands venue 12 months ago, and more of the same this year will ensure Sowery claims the runner-up spot and the seven valuable FIA Super Licence points that go with it.
“Donington was our strongest round from last year so I’m aiming to continue that trend at the final round,” he commented.
“I don’t know what it is about Donington but I’ve always enjoyed it and gone well there, and heading to the circuit with that in your mind always gives you a bit of a boost. The circuit matches my driving style too.”
Two second place finishes at Snetterton last time out, combined with a weekend of misfortune for Carlin’s James Pull meant that he leapfrogged his rival in the standings. With little to choose between them, Sowery knows that he needs to be at the top of his game at Donington: “It’s very close between me and James in the championship, so I need to maximise my efforts to make sure I get as strong a series of results as possible. I want to go out there to enjoy myself, it’s vital to finish as high up in the championship as possible as the Super Licence points are important.”
Sowery was also quick to praise the efforts of his Lanan Racing team, with whom he has a long standing relationship. “Lanan have been a huge help for me in my career. They introduced me to cars, did a great job in F3 Cup when we won that [in 2014], and that relationship has continued into BRDC British F3. To have finished P3 last year without any testing was a real testament to their ability and to go one better this year would be much deserved as they have done a brilliant job.”
