BRDC British F3 podium finisher Billy Monger has been presented with the Helen Rollason Award at tonight's BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award ceremony at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham.
Monger was announced as the winner of the award this morning, and was presented with his trophy by five time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton, who has been a major supporter of Billy following the young Brit's F4 accident.
In front of a crowd of 15,000 in the arena, and a TV audience of millions, Monger was joined on stage by a number of officials and marshals who were present on the day of his accident.
He commented: "I want to say a massive thank you for this award, I came here last year and had the pleasure to watch Bradley Lowery's parents come up and collect this award. It was such an emotional and special night and it meant a lot to me to be here able to be in the audience with you guys and witness it first hand.
"I've brought just a few people along with me today! I have to say thank you to to everyone in the audience, everyone at QMC [Queens Medical Centre] and the doctors and surgeons. Quite simply, without these guys, I might not be here today. So it's a real honour to be able to share this stage with them because the work they did for me - they saved my life, it's as simple as that.
"As well, we have the guys that helped me to achieve my dream, I set my targets quite high after my accident to get back racing, and that was the goal I set for myself, and without everyone at Carlin Motorsport, I wouldn't have been able to achieve my dream to get back racing. This is a complete team sport, you see me on the front stage and you don't quite realise the work that goes on behind the scenes and I want to say a big congratulations to these guys because their belief in me more than anything allowed me to achieve this."
