The inaugural British F3 iRacing Championship will commence at Oulton Park on Sunday 17 May, with a packed grid of current and former British F3 drivers anticipated. The new venture is being launched in association with Apex Racing TV and will be streamed live weekly across multiple channels.
It’s hoped the five-round championship will keep drivers, teams and fans engaged ahead of the 2020 race season, which is suspended due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The ‘virtual’ opener at the fabulous Oulton Park circuit will be followed by visits to Spa, Silverstone, Brands Hatch and Donington Park.
Each round of the new championship will comprise two races plus practice and qualifying, broadcast live at 6pm BST on the official BRDC British F3 Facebook page and YouTube channel with a presenting team featuring popular commentator Mark Werrell.
Points will replicate the actual British F3 race series, with 35 points for a win down to one point for 20th place. The second race will be a full reverse grid.
British F3 spokesman Giles Butterfield said: “With no on-track race action possible at the moment, this championship provides a great outlet for teams, drivers and fans to get involved in racing until we’re able to start the 2020 season proper. iRacing is one of the most authentic online simulators and really tests drivers to the maximum, so we can expect to see some superb battles in the coming weeks between the existing British F3 talent and guest drivers.
“This new venture has been made possible with the help of our long-time supporter John Cavill, who is closely involved with the current British F3 Championship. The winner’s trophy will be named after his late father Jack, a great motorsport ambassador, aligning it with The Jack Cavill Pole Position Cup, which has been in existence since 2013 and is awarded at every round. John provides a prize fund and trophies throughout the season for drivers who take pole position in the weekend’s races.”
