Fortec Motorsports driver Johnathan Hoggard has taken more wins than any other driver in British F3 this season, and heads to Donington with a fighting chance of taking this year's title.
Despite his considerable win tally, a combination of bad luck and a couple of DNFs mean he has a 52 point gap to championship leader Clement Novalak. But Hoggard heads to Donington safe in the knowledge that he was the standout performer the last time the field raced here, securing a double podium and a double win. A repeat performance this time around could well put Novalak under pressure.
The 18-year-old has been a championship contender right from the off, starting his season with a podium in race one at Oulton Park, and then a maiden win in the third race of the year. He claimed his second win next time out at Snetterton, before doing the double at Donington and finally taking his fifth victory at Brands Hatch. Additional podiums at Silverstone, Brands Hatch and Silverstone again mean he's been Novalak's closest challenger all season, and here's how the young Brit is feeling ahead of the Donington Decider:
What’s the mindset like heading to Donington – obviously there’s a reasonably big gap to Clement but can that be overcome?
"My mindset going into Donington is just the same as any other race weekend. There is a reasonably big gap to Clement, however I won’t be giving up until the chequered flag falls on race three."
Are you feeling any pressure, or given the points scenario are you fairly relaxed about things?
"There is always pressure to perform during the race weekends; however the points scenario is what it is so I will just have to do my best."
Looking back on the year as a whole, is there anything you feel you could have done differently to be a bit closer in the championship or has luck just not been on your side?
"Obviously there are always things that I could do better in the championship to be higher, however the races that I haven’t finished have cost me the most so far in my opinion. Clement has done a great job this year with being consistent and that is why he is leading going into the last round."
Two wins at Donington in British F4 and the same this year in British F3 – what is it about Donington that seems to suit you so much?
"Donington has always been a track I thoroughly enjoy, I had my first win in British F4 and every time I’ve been there so far I seem to do well. One thing in particular is the fast corners where a lot of commitment is needed."
