José Garfias will complete Elite Motorsport’s 2021 BRDC British Formula 3 Championship line-up, following the announcement this morning that the 16-year-old Mexican will embark on his first season of racing in Europe with the team.
San Luis Potosí-born Garfias began karting aged 11, winning multiple races before his first season of car racing in October 2019. José netted fourth place in the 2019-20 North and Central American Formula 4 Championship, securing three victories as he finished in the top five in 15 of the season’s 20 races.
Garfias is the second driver from the Seven GP driver management stable to join Elite Motorsport for 2021, following the earlier announcement of Javier Sagrera Pont.
Garfias' arrival in the team ensures that Elite will have a full three-car entry, with British driver Tom Lebbon the other confirmed entry, for its maiden season in the championship. The calendar is due to begin at Brands Hatch on 22/23 May.
Garfias said: “My goal for this season is to learn and gain more experience. Hopefully I can have success along the way. I am very excited for 2021 because racing in Europe, and F3, will be something completely new for me. I can’t wait for the season to start, racing on the famous tracks in Britain, and to work with the guys at Elite Motorsport. I would also like to thank everyone who is involved in this exciting project. For the support from Seven GP and to Eddie [Ives] for giving me this amazing opportunity.”
Team owner Eddie Ives, said: “I’m very much looking forward to welcoming José into our team. As with Javier [Sagrera Pont], José comes to us via the Seven GP programme which assists drivers in moving up the motor racing ladder. José impressed me in his initial F3 test at Valencia last December. He was very quick considering his experience. He’ll be embarking on his maiden F3 season and like Javier, racing in Britain for the first time, but I’m certain with some races under his belt, he’ll score some good results during the course of the year. I’m delighted that Elite is entering its first F3 campaign with Javier, José and Tom.”
