The Lanan Racing BRDC British F3 team held a driver evaluation day with three F4 drivers at Donington Park today (Thursday) as they ramped up preparations for the 2020 season.
Williams F1 star George Russell, who raced with Lanan in 2014 and won the BRDC F4 Championship with the squad, was on hand to meet the drivers and give advice in between sessions, while also sharing his experiences of the racing ladder.
Lanan tested Australian Bart Horsten, American Carter Williams and British contender Tommy Foster, with the trio all enjoying their first taste of British F3 and racking up significant mileage in the process.
Each driver started with installation laps before progressing to longer stints, with runs of up to 18 laps around the National Circuit achieved during the afternoon.
Horsten, who finished fifth overall in British F4 in 2019 commented: “It’s been pretty awesome! It’s an amazing car and engine and so different to what I’ve driven, and it was a great experience. I’m so thankful to Graham Johnson and Lanan for giving me this opportunity. It was quite a day to meet someone like George Russell and it’s been a day to remember.”
Williams, a triple F4 race winner in the second half of the season said: “It’s been amazing and I can’t thank the guys at Lanan enough to give us this opportunity to move on from F4 to F3. The car is amazing, everything is just that little bit better, the braking, the downforce, and I’ve had a tonne of fun today! This is definitely in my mind now, it’s where I want to go and hopefully we can get it together to be here next year.”
Foster, another driver to win an F4 contest added: “It’s a complete new game, it’s got more power, more downforce, more grip. My pace was pretty good and I need to keep improving now. It was great to see George [Russell], he’s obviously very close with Lanan so it was good that he came down and gave a bit of tuition, he’s one of the best in the world and I it’s been a really good day.”
Russell said: “It’s been great to see the Lanan boys again and see what’s going on in the F3 paddock. It only feels like yesterday that I was last here! I stay in touch with Graham and the other guys even now, and I was fortunate to be in the championship with Lanan to clinch the title with them. It’s been great to be here today with the drivers and see what may be happening on the F3 grid next year, this is where it all starts for them!”
Team Principal Graham Johnson said: “It’s been a great day, all three of the drivers have done a brilliant job. It was great of George to take the time out of his massively busy schedule to come and see the boys, it was really nice. We can’t wait to get going in 2020, I think we’ll be in good shape!”
More action from today's day at Donington will be available on the British F3 website and social media feeds tomorrow.
