British-American driver Frederick Lubin and his Arden Motorsport team are making their BRDC British F3 debut this season, but both are expecting to be fighting at the front of the grid almost immediately.
The 16-year-old finished as the runner-up in the British F4 Rookie Cup last year, while Arden have a long single-seater heritage going all the way back to 1997. The Banbury-based squad was formed by Red Bull F1 Team Principal Christian Horner and his brother Garry, and have since raced in F3000, GP2, GP3, Formula Renault 3.5 and Eurocup, FIA Formula Two and British F4 with much success.
No surprise then, that the team, Lubin and teammate Alex Connor have quickly familiarised themselves with their latest challenge.
“We’re getting to grips with the car really well,” Lubin enthuses. “Here (Donington Park) seems to be a bit of a struggle for us, but we’re not too far off. I’m really looking forward to Brands and I think it’s going to be really close and really exciting to see how everyone gets on.
“We seem to have got on with it a lot quicker than we thought, which has helped, and it’s obviously the right decision to make [to join British F3]. It’s a really good package, it seems to just work together and it’s been really easy to get on top of.”
With a strong pre-season campaign that has taken him to most of this year’s circuits, Lubin is optimistic of making an instant impact at the front of this year’s field.
“I think we can definitely aim to put both our cars in the top-five, so it just a question of whether we can put that together consistently,” he says. “It’s only testing for now, so it’s [a case of seeing] how representative everyone else is, but at the minute we can take the positives. I think we have a really strong race car and a qualifying car, so I’m really excited to see how we get on.”
When asked which venue he was looking forward to racing on most, Lubin picked out two current F1 venues as the standout events.
“Hopefully we get to go to Spa, I think that will be really really cool, but also Silverstone for sure. Our pace [in testing] around Silverstone has been really good so that’s definitely one to look forward to, and we get to go there twice, so that will be good fun.”
