Billy Monger returned to racing action in 2018, with a move up to the BRDC British F3 Championship with Carlin, and sent shockwaves around the world with his performances.
The 19-year-old had missed the majority of the 2017 season after his F4 accident at Donington, but made a triumphant return to action in British F3. He claimed a dream podium on his comeback at Oulton Park, and backed that up with further podiums at Spa-Francorchamps, two poles and a podium at Donington, and a final rostrum result at Silverstone. Each result saw widespread acclaim from media and fans, and he is now looking to cement his plans for 2019.
“I have no idea what the future holds for me, but I’ve had a great year in British F3 and I just want to say a massive thanks to everyone at Carlin and all the guys at British F3 for making it a really good season for me,” Monger commented. “It’s been a great championship for me to get my racing back up in, and we will see what the future holds.
“It’s been a big learning curve this year, obviously before the start of the season we didn’t know firstly if I’d be racing, or two, where I would finish if I was competing. So I think overall with the podiums we’ve had this season and the pole positions at Donington, it’s been a strong year.”
Monger came agonisingly close to claiming his first win at, of all places, Donington. But the Brit was also optimistic that he could have claimed victory at the season finale at Silverstone, had it not been affected so much by rain.
“Starting from fourth in the last race, and the pace we had in wet conditions, we could hopefully have grabbed our maiden win, which would have been a good way to see out the year, but there’s always looking forward to next year. I don’t know where I’ll be racing or what I’ll be doing, but hopefully I can be fighting for race wins again.”
