Carlin’s Zak O’Sullivan came within a whisker of claiming the British F4 crown last year, and the 16-year-old is aiming to make amends as he steps up to British F3 with the same team this year.
The Irish-British racer scored more wins than any other driver in F4 last year, standing on the top step of the podium nine times across the season in his first season of single seater action, and he’s quickly got to grips with his new challenger.
“It’s all good so far” he comments. “I’m really looking forward to it [the start of the season] to be honest. I’ve more or less got there with the car now, there’s a couple of things I need to refine, but I’m looking forward to the start.”
Quietly confident, O’Sullivan is steering away from making too many predictions before the start of the season, but is hoping that Carlin’s past form in British F3, plus his racing record so far, can propel them towards the front of the grid in 2021.
“Obviously Carlin won the championship last year so I’m in a good environment to be moving up with them from F4. We’ve got to wait and see I think, it’s no given. I think we will be quite up there and hopefully we’ll find out at round one.”
With the season delayed slightly due to the Covid-19 pandemic, O’Sullivan has been taking advantage of the extended pre-season testing period and the weather benefits that testing during the spring provides.
“I’ve been testing throughout the beginning of the year, it all got shifted a bit after the late start to the season, but we’re getting testing in with some good weather at the moment so that’s nice.”
As for venues he’s most looking forward to visiting, a picturesque circuit in Cheshire is high among the Cheltenham resident’s estimations.
“Oulton Park will be entertaining I think. It felt pretty fast in an F4 car and a lot quicker in the F3 car when I’ve tested there! It’s got such character and I’m looking forward to that.”
