Kaylen Frederick, Ayrton Simmons and Manuel Maldonado were the top three finishers in the first BRDC British F3 race of the weekend at Spa Francorchamps. Here's what they said after the contest:
Winner, Kaylen Frederick:
"At this track you can actually really pass as opposed to a lot of other tracks. I got a good start and was up to P3 after turn one and then I kept the pressure on the guys in front of me. I had really good pace in the middle sector so I could stay right up behind the other drivers and once I got ahead, could create a bit of a gap and run my own race pretty much.
"I just kept setting Ayrton up to get a run on him down the Kemmel straight and I stuck behind him in the last sector to make sure I was right up behind him. I didn't want to be first leading onto the big straight so I stuck behind him, made the pass stick and then put a really good lap in and built up a little gap.
"I think race two tomorrow is going to be quite an interesting race, coming from the back it's going to be about making the right decisions and making sure I do the best I can to make it to the front and not make any mistakes or get caught up in any mess either."
Second, Ayrton Simmons:
"I had lots of fun out there with Kaylen, big credit to him for winning the race but second is still really good for the championship and to finish on the podium at this circuit is a bonus so I'm really happy with it.
"I thought on the last lap I might be able to get past in the slipstream but I wasn't quite close enough which is a shame but all part of the fun and games and I really enjoyed it out there. Hopefully the other two races will be the same.
"Everything comes a bit easier when you start further up the grid, everyone behaves a bit better. We will see what race two brings but fingers crossed. We've got a good car and a good set up, so hopefully we can keep improving but I'm sure all the other teams will too.
"I was really worried about the rain at the start, I thought it was going to carry on but it dried out pretty quick and it was basically already dry on the first lap."
Third, Manuel Maldonado:
"I really enjoyed that. Coming from seventh I got a good start and made sure I kept in the race and got in people's slipstream. I managed to get past people clean and smooth, so a really positive race for me.
"There were plenty of moves, even some risky ones where I went onto the grass, but I had to get them done to get onto the podium so I'm quite happy with that.
"It got quite close for the lead in the last laps but it was too much of a risk to get involved in that battle so I preferred to keep the points and hold back a little bit.
"Tomorrow we will try and replicate this, I'm a bit further behind for the first race but it's going to be the same where I'll try and get in the tow and try and do people on the straights."
